Sand dunes, sea lions and snakes @ Port Gibbon, South Australia

After stocking up in Whyalla we headed further SSW towards Port Gibbon. Heading along the dirt track into Port Gibbon we drove past the main camping area/town and camped a couple of km’s up the other end near the sand dunes.

Once set up the kids had a great time sliding down the big dunes on boogie boards. From the camper it was a short walk out to the rocky point and to our surprise we stumbled across two sea lions fast asleep in sea weed nests on the rocks. They kind of looked at us without too much interest, rolled over and went back to sleep. To see them up close in the wild was pretty special.

The next morning we woke up to a flat car battery, which was odd as the closest camper to us also had battery problems (and stranger still in the closest town we saw a car being jump started – X Files material perhaps?!?)  Luckily we didn’t need to wait long for a couple to come along in their car, they were staying in the camp area in town and were looking for a fishing spot to launch their tinny.

As luck would have it, he also turned out to be an auto electrician and an ex tour operator in the Flinders-Oodnadatta-SA outback. We couldn’t believe it so we were able to get the car jump started and have an extensive “where to go, what to see” lesson with some local guide tips.

While Sean was sorting out the car and having a great chat with our new friends, the kids were in the van catching up on some of their school work and I was on the phone to one of their teachers, when a snake slithered out of the bush about 5 metres in front of me. I managed to keep it together pretty well and just casually mention “Oh, I’ve seen a snake, better go!” In the next hour we saw 5 more snakes. There was no need to discuss it further – we were out of there!
