We stumbled across this little gem unintentionally. We’d planned on chilling out in at the Bay of Fires for a few days, but the weather wasn’t fab – a chilly on shore gale wasn’t so pleasant, so despite all the rave reviews for the Bay of Fires, we decided to be thankful for the few stunning beach days we’d managed at Freycinet and go for something different. A quick delve into the trusty Lonely Planet highlighted the “Pub in the Paddock” free camp ground next to a Pub! Winner! The winning goal for me was it was supposed to have a beer swilling pig named Princess Pricilla. And down the road there is a Cheese Factory, bonus!
Most people probably don’t know that Sean & I each have a history with pigs & pig farming. I’m not saying an extensive history, or anything that remotely qualifies us to work in any form of agriculture, but it’s there nonetheless. Sean grew up on a piggery in Gayndah, west of Bundaberg in QLD and I spent a year living on a pig farm in Sweden, which I loved. In our quest of a change of lifestyle, we’ve joked about having acreage where we could have a pig running around and we would name her Pam. Most likely a succession of pigs named Pam…for obvious reasons.
Back to the Pub in the Paddock, I think we’ve hit upon awesome idea #101. A Pub on acreage. A paddock for campers. A café serving great coffee & home grown freshly baked yummies, nutritious homestyle food, and of course the local cider, wines and beers! The ideas are becoming clearer, a year to find the location!
Oh I nearly forgot…Sean is in his happy place here with a river running through the property, chockablock with trout apparently, so with the advice of the Publican and a few random locals to “Just get down there mate!” and we haven’t seen him since….
